Isn’t the green cake, the custodial care, the sitting, standing, engaging, and eating when you are preoccupied about the size of the carp at the lake, the doors coated in red at the casino, the white pelican that didn’t return, the lockbox on my grandmother’s medicine, and my anger about the insistence on my dyed hair, which I dyed over a year ago with semi-permanent dye – aren’t these
the shadows
that become the monster
so that we can be scared
of something else
